Research has shown that the more a child or young person understands their diagnosis (of autism or ADHD), the more aligned they are with their neurodivergent identity and the more positive they feel about it. 

A positive sense of neurodivergent identity leads to greater self esteem, positive mental health, and advocacy and confidence in expressing their needs. 

Just because a child or young person has received a diagnosis, it certainly doesn't mean that they understand what it is, or how it applies to them. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, so a process of discovery can begin for that person.

These are 1:1 sessions with one of our highly trained assistant psychologists, supervised by Dr Liz Dawes, clinical psychologist.

There can be up to 8 sessions which explore:

• strengths and needs for that child
• how these relate to the world
• how to celebrate strengths but accommodate differences
• what is autism and/or ADHD and how does it apply to themselves
• skills and techniques for coping with challenges

Typically these sessions will be 1:1 with the young person but parents will be invited into the session towards the end to hear about what the session has involved, and if there are any techniques to practise between sessions.
